Happy Birthday Shahid – Looking Back at some of the gems he acted  in.

As the stunner and ace artist, Shahid Kapoor turns 35 years old today, we look back at some of his best work in films.  With a career ranging over a decade, Shahid has managed to find his distinctiveness as an actor and continues to enjoy varied roles as a lead man. Barely has he disappointed his fans and enjoys a great loyalty among his admirers.

        1.       Haider (2014)

A brilliant adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet starring top notch performers in the likes of  Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan, Narendra Jha, Shraddha Kapoor had its Title Role, ‘Haider’  executed by Shahid Kapoor.
By virtue of his father’s disappearance, Shahid enacts a stress disorder rather well. He exposes his      uncle, Khurram’s cruel intents that led to his father’s death. The film gives out a strong message that, ‘Revenge only results in revenge’.

      2.       R.Rajkumar (2013)

Shahid represents a small-town youth as Rajkumar. Aimless he lands at Shivraj’s (Sonu Sood) doorstep, seeking an employment. Helping the drug baron Shivraj compete with his arch rival Manik ( Ashish Vidyarthi), Rajkumar maintains his loyalty with his employer. Fate gets  Shivraj and Rajkumar to love the same woman Chanda ( Sonakshi Sinha) and they end up fighting for her. The film did decent business at the box office and was popular for its songs, Gandi Baat and Saree Ke Fall Sa. Shahid was seen as a small town local for the first time.

      3.       Kaminey (2009)

A tale of two twin brothers, Guddu and Charlie, one has a lisp while the other stutters, played incredibly well by Shahid Kapoor. Kudos to him for pulling off two different characters in one narrative. Charlie a small time criminal needs his cocaine to sell, which was stolen off corrupt cops while Guddu needs to win his Sweety ( Priyanka Chopra)’s hand in marriage. Estranged brothers meet in a thrilling climax to decide their fates.  A box office winner!

 4.       Vivah (2006)

Shahid played the role of Prem, a love-struck yet shy boy from Delhi who is all set to marry Poonam ( Amrita Rao) in a traditional arranged set up. However, a few days before the wedding, Poonam meets with a huge accident as she suffers burns all over her body. Despite her ill-health, Prem marries her informally in the hospital. Vivah was a blockbuster hit with Shahid managing to carry the legacy of Prem in Sooraj Barjatya’s films.

     5.       Jab We Met (2007)

A wealthy business man Aditya is frustrated with his job and his recent break-up, he boards a train randomly to find a girl named Geet ( Kareena Kapoor) who is full of life as company. A cute one-sided romance ensues between them, but her love for Anshumann gets them to separate briefly. They unite later to realize their true feelings for each other.  Jab We Met was Imitiaz Ali’s most noteworthy work. Shahid was accepted as a mainstream hero upon its release.

We congratulate Shahid for delivering such diverse performances and wish him the best ahead!

Top Nominated Films in Award Functions from the Glorious year of 2015

We just love the festive award functions whenever they are telecast on TV. It brings in much excitement to see so many stars under one roof and how they would react on winning the coveted awards. Everything from dance performances to gigs keep us on the edge of our seats. Celebrity anchors and award presenters up the glamour and entertainment quotient.

Some of the best / popular films from 2015 which have received maximum nominations in 2016 are as follows :

 1.    Badlapur

A great risk taken by Varun Dhawan to play a vengeful husband who plans to shoot down the killers of his wife and son.  For the same, he waits until 20 years to reach the main convict. It has shown quite a bit of time lapse with the aging of all associated characters. The main antagonist, Nawazuddin Siddiqui does immense justice to his purpose of fleeing from a bank robbery and promptly killing  Varun (Raghu)’s family in a rage. Shobha (Divya Dutta) needs a special mention for her small yet strong appearance as an NGO worker who works to rehabilitate prisoners. Jhimli ( Huma Quereshi) does a great job in potraying her loyalty towards her boyfriend Liak ( Nawazuddin).  All in all, a great career move by the actor and kudos to all characters who played their role to the T.

 2.    Bajirao Mastani

A beautiful love story presented in the backdrop of a war front. Two warriors, Bajirao (Ranveer) and Mastani ( Deepika) , develop feelings for each other as they fight the invaders in Bundelkhand.  Although Peshwa Bajirao ( Youngest Prime Minister) is married, an exchange of a dagger, as per the Rajput tradition, destines them to be married. When this new reaches Bajirao at his battleground, he defeats the enemy, but succumbs to injuries and hallucinations and dies. They are known to have untied through death.

 3.    Talvar

A gripping thriller etched out by Meghna Gulzar where the case of Arushi Talvar’s murder re-opens.  Meghna tries to show different investigative teams approach towards the case and their varied outcomes / hypothesis. The local police hurriedly come to the conclusion of  an alleged affair between Shruti & Khempal ( servant) which was the reason her parents committed the double murder ( Honor Killing). This leads to a public outrage and hence, the CDI ( Central Department of Investigation)  is handed over the case. Now the competent Ashwin Kumar ( Irrfan Khan) approaches the case and conducts narco tests to reveal that Tandon’s assistant Kanhaiya and his two accomplices were behind Shruti’s murder.
He arranges for evidence and presents it to his new boss CDI Chief who dismisses his perspective and mishandles the proof, in order to seek promotion.  A new probe team works on the case to come back with the same hypothesis of Shruti’s parents being the murderers.  Her parents are convicted and jailed.

 4.    Dum Laga Ke Haisha

A beautiful slice of life film based in Haridwar. A young couple are set up for an arranged community wedding. The boy being uneducated, opts for an overweight girl, albeit unhappily. They have a strained new marriage as Prem Prakash Tiwari ( Ayushmann Khurrana) is too embarrassed to accept Sandhya ( Bhumi) as his wife.  They opt for a divorce mutually, after things go out of hand.  The court decides to give them 6 months to salvage their relationship. They get back but maintain a distance. Events of a competing CD shop coming to their town, leads them to participate in a ‘Dum Lagao’ contest in which Prem is supposed to carry his wife Sandhya all the way to the finish line to counter competition from new CD shop owner . They fall in love during the race and accept each other by the end.

      5.    Tanu Weds Manu Returns

A festive film Tanu Weds Manu Returns shows the protagonist set to re-marry his former wife’s look-alike. Their marriage hits a rough patch owing to differences they are seen discussing in a mental rehabilitation center. Manu ( Madhvan) then falls in love with a completely different, outgoing rebellious yet cute Kusum (Datto). But during his second marriage event, realizes his love for Tanu. Kusum bravely sacrifices her love and gets them re-united.

 6.    Piku

Piku will always be loved for its simplicity. A road journey taken by a Father and Daughter from Delhi to Kolkata, to visit their ancestral home and close relatives, leads them to open up serious discussions about life’s ideologies, parenting and expectations from children. Rana ( Irrfan Khan) becomes a part of this debate as they deal with chronic constipation issues, bickering by Bhashkor ( Amitabh Bachchan) over petty issues and the pent up frustration of Piku ( Deepika) . They survive the drive and reach Kolkata to witness familial problems of immediate family. Rana  very subtly persuades Piku against selling of her ancestral property. Bajrangi Pawan is now on the hunt for a job, which brings him to his late father’s friend’s residence. He meets Rasika ( Kareena) there and instantly develops feelings for her. While his stay, he introduces Munni to the family, who is welcomed in their abode albeit briefly. As soon it is found out that Munni is a Pakistani Muslim. How his good nature leads him into an unknown country and how he is suspected to be an Indian Spy come in his way of fulfilling his mission.

 8.    Baby

A thrilling narrative to single out terrorists and related organizations that take refuge in our country with the purpose to terrorize our citizens. Their mind is anti-national and they believe they are working for attaining respect and love from the Almighty. ‘Baby’ a nickname for a counter-intelligence group hunts down the terrorists and breaks their clan. A lovely watch.

9.    Drishyam

When your family in in trouble, you go to any lengths to safeguard them. Such is the case in Drishyam. When Vijay Salgaonkar’s daughter Anju’s MMS clip is made by her fellow classmate Sameer, he uses it to get physical with her. Anju’s mother Nandini intervenes and in the events leading up to a fight, happen to kill Sameer. The case of him missing becomes huge with the police and media.  Sameer’s mother Inspector Meera Deshmukh is handling her son’s case and gets into a detailed investigation to hunt down the abductor. Some films ride on the Director’s name and they immediately induce expectations among a viewer. Directors are then equivalent to the stars of the film and help pull in their fan-base into the  theaters.

Celebrated director Karan Johar, is an icon for many budding film-makers. He is multi-talented and applies his charm to many different jobs in the media, be it with his judging skills or impeccable anchoring.  He has worked in diametrically different professions  as an actor, fashion and jewelry designer.  He once stated that his films will always  be about human relationships, as they intrigue him the most. But do you know a special part he always has in his films.  It is the endearing presence of Kajol in all his directorial ventures.  Recall Rock N Roll Soniye in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Student of the year’s hit track ‘The Disco Song’, Maahi Ve in Kal Ho Na Ho. Apart from these special cameos, Karan Johar has always cast his favorite actress in lead roles in films like Kuch Kuch Hota, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, My Name Is Khan. Interestingly, Kajol is one among the many hit actresses from 90’s era, who continues to work as a lead actress even now.

 2.)   Sooraj Barjatya

The name says it all, the most amazing film-maker of our times has a distinct directorial quality of presenting films based on stories of families. Being a family man himself, Sooraj Barjatya has made numerous movies around the concept of marriage, relationships and respect for the elderly. His favorite character name remains to be ‘Prem’ and most fans associate this name with Superstar, Salman Khan. He once confessed his love for grand celebrations and family relationships come from his experience as a child.

 3.)   Rohit Shetty

This man had a flop debut with Zameen after which he took off to deliver only highly grossing films. His brand of films boast about action and comedy and sometimes a blend of both. His uniqueness lies in the fact that he uses Cars in every film of his. Not just using but blowing them up in the anti-gravitational format. When coaxed about this distinctiveness, Rohit Shetty, said he believed that children love cars and hence, he makes them an integral part of his films.

 4.)   Madhur Bhandarkar

This man is known for his controversial entertainment related brand of movies. A keen observer of the industry and its dark underbelly, Madhur Bhandarkar presents films on Fashion, Films most realistically. He has ventured into different zones with Traffic Signal, Corporate, Chandni Bar but has retained his approach to show what goes behind the scenes in the real lives of his protagonists. He belives in casting powerful women as the lead in all his films.

 5.)   Subhash Ghai

The master of movies, Subhash Ghai started off as an actor initially and with Shatrungan Singha’s assistance turned director.  His brand of films will always have amazing music woven into the narrative. Be it Taal, Yuvraaj, Yaadien, Kisna, Pardes, Karz, Hero. Off-late the director has chosen A.R Rahman to make his music and even suggested the musician to use the words Jai Ho in his  renditions. The actor’s favorite cast is Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff who have done multiple films with him.  His recent venture, Kanchi starred newcomers in the lead, but failed to rake in business.

Innovative latest Marketing Campaigns

Bollywood is known to lure with their amazing marketing strategies. We present to you high-points of several film campaigns, which surely made us associate with the film.

Here we go.

      1.       Neerja

Trust Sonam Kapoor to be a pro at Social Media. This lovely young actress has always impressed us with her knowledge of the medium. She has utilized it to the fullest for film promotions.  Currently running #FearVsNeerja, she has roped in her actor buddies to make a short video and share their fears with the world. She is personally, re-posting these videos.  We’ve got you the most popular ones below

      2.      Tamasha

The super talented star cast of Tamasha, Ranbir and Deepika, flaunted their acting skills with a staged ‘Tamasha’ on Comedy Nights with Kapil. The two seemed extremely prepared for their appearance and came out with flying colors in their acts. Ranbir was seen enacting a Street Entertainer who collects money from audience in return of his talent. He also aped Dev Anand’s style for some acts,  which he even used in his hit song Matargashti. They staged the classic Romeo-Juliet proposal albeit in a comical style.  The fans were left intrigued with their show-stopping performance.

      3.       Saala Khadoos

This impactful film was marketed neatly. We believe that Social Media has turned out to become one of the biggest talking points for any film. With celebrity generated content going viral,  fans are interacting with the film in question / celebrity like never before.  Saala Khadoos’s Producer started the trend #MeraSaalaKhadoos where in other celebrities had to share pictures of their mentor who have pushed them to do better.
Notably, all these messages are published on Twitter, the social network, used by majority of filmdom folks.

          4.       Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3

Trust Ekta Kapoor to have wild film content as well as wilder campaigns for her film’s promotions. Her company Alt Entertainment devised the idea of tying up with 40 odd porn websites to advertise the trailer of ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3’. Reaching the right set of target audience with this move as the film’s lead actors were a part of porn movies, this was indeed a masterstroke.

 5.       Bajirao Mastani

Sanjay Leela Bhansali can create love stories to war zones with equal ease. Trust him for sensitizing you with his great film-making skills. We love his fiction tales as they seem real as well his films which are based on historic legends.  To open the promotions of Bajirao Mastani, the ace film maker conducted a Maha Aarti to launch his song ‘Gajanana’ during the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. The film was blessed and remains to be 2015’s favorite magnum opus.

We shall re-visit some more campaigns and keep you in the loop for all the lovely innovations marketer’s come up with.
